Hot Rod vs Restomod: What’s the Difference?

Car terms can mean different things depending on where you are in the world. To help our customers find the right parts for their build, we often use both Hot Rod and Restomod. Here’s a simple breakdown of what they usually mean.

What is a Hot Rod?

In the UK, a Hot Rod is normally an older American car that’s been modified to go faster and look tougher. Most people picture something from the 1930s or 1940s, like a Ford coupe with a big V8, loud exhausts, and plenty of custom work.

Hot rods started out as people taking old cars and making them quicker using whatever parts they could get hold of. Over time it became its own style and culture built around speed, engineering, and personalisation.

What is a Restomod?

A Restomod is usually a classic car that keeps its original look but has modern parts underneath to make it nicer to drive.

In the UK, this often means cars like Minis, Escorts, MGBs, or classic Porsches fitted with upgrades such as:

  • Modern fuel injection
  • Better brakes and suspension
  • Improved cooling
  • ECU engine management
  • More reliable electrics
  • Modern gearboxes

The idea is to keep the character of the original car while improving the way it performs on modern roads.

The American View

In the USA, the term Hot Rod is often used much more broadly. If you’ve modified a vehicle to make it faster, more reliable, or more fun to drive, many people would simply say you’ve “hot rodded” it.

Because of that, a Restomod can also fall under the Hot Rod umbrella depending on who you ask.

So what’s the real difference?

The truth is there’s a lot of overlap. A classic Mustang with fuel injection, upgraded suspension, and modern brakes could easily be called either a Hot Rod or a Restomod.

A lot of it comes down to style, the type of car, and where in the world you are.
