What is an Individual Throttle Body (ITB) ?

An Individual Throttle Body (ITB) system uses one throttle body per cylinder, allowing each cylinder to draw air directly through its own throttle. This improves throttle response, enhances airflow, and delivers the distinctive induction sound that makes ITBs popular in motorsport, classic performance, and high-performance road car applications.

They’re known for sharp throttle response, stronger performance and that unmistakable race‑car induction sound but there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes.

What Makes ITBs Different

Most production engines breathe through a single throttle body feeding a plenum. When you open the throttle, the plenum has to fill with air before anything reaches the cylinders, which adds delay.

ITBs change that completely. Each cylinder gets its own throttle butterfly positioned right at the intake port. On a four‑cylinder engine, that means four throttles working in sync instead of one central unit. Because the air path is so much shorter, the engine reacts far more quickly to any change in throttle position.

Sharper, More Connected Driving

The biggest thing you feel with ITBs is how instantly the engine responds. Every input becomes more direct and precise, giving the car a more engaging, motorsport‑inspired character. Whether it’s a road car or a track build, ITBs make the engine feel alive in a way a single‑throttle setup simply can’t match.

ITBs also open up a lot of tuning potential. Instead of redesigning an entire plenum, you can fine‑tune airflow with components like air horns to shape how the engine breathes. When combined with performance camshafts, a freer‑flowing exhaust or modern engine management, ITBs help you get the most out of every upgrade by letting you tailor airflow to the engine’s needs.
